The figure below (from Jensen, 2007, Remote Sensing of the Environment) shows six types of remote sensing systems, comparing and contrasting those using scanning mirrors, linear pushbroom arrays, linear whiskbroom areas, and frame area arrays. The digital frame area array is analogous to the single vertical aerial photograph.
•An advantage of airborne remote sensing, compared to satellite remote sensing, is the capability of offering very high spatial resolution images (20 cm or less). •The disadvantages are low coverage area and high cost per unit area of ground coverage. •It is not cost-effective to map a large area using an airborne remote sensing system.
Active remote sensing systems emit radiation on the study object and measure the reflected amount of radiation. Types of remote sensors can be divided further into non-scanning and scanning systems. Scanning systems employ a sensor with a narrow field of view sweeping over the terrain to collect and produce a two-dimensional image of the Earth’s surface. Multispectral scanner images are acquired by means of along track or across track scanning system.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an example of an active system. Active remote sensing (radar and lidar) systems are rapidly increasing in use since the launch of the ERS-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite in 1991. The human eye is a remote sensor and, although we can capture images which may be stored in the brain and later retrieved, we can only reproduce them in a subjective sense. The eye can only capture visible radiation which occupies a very small part of the complete range of radiation (which is known as the electromagnetic spectrum).

2021-02-01 · First Earth-orbiting satellite designed for remote sensing of the Earth's oceans and carried the first spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Collected data on sea-surface winds, sea-surface temperatures, wave heights, internal waves, atmospheric water, sea ice features and ocean topography. Launched in June 1978 and operated until October 1978.

Ans: Pushbroom scanner (along-track scanner) is a type of scanning system in which detector scans the terrain of earth in the flight direction directly beneath the platform.
R-Scan has been field-tested successfully and is undergoing integration with additional detection technologies as an integrated system. Each type of remote sensing is differently suited for analysis—some are optimal for closer scanning and some are much more advantageous from great distances.
